  • Abstract:

The introduction of GSM into Nigeria in 2001 has had profound effect on virtually all sectors of the
Nation’s economy. This study examines the impact of GSM on transportation and crime in Akure, Ondo
State. Cross-sectional data was collected by means of structured questionnaire administered on a random
sample of 250 respondents in Akure. Also, secondary data on crime in Akure was collected from Ondo
State Police Command. Analysis of the data revealed that there is significant decrease in the number of
travels made by respondents outside Akure due to the introduction of GSM. Also, there was initial
significant reduction in the number of crimes reported followed by a steady rise. The study, among others;
recommends that government, policy makers and security agents should take cognizance of the factors that
led to upsurge of crime rate in Akure after the initial decline.
