  • Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluate the continued use of 33 kV network to supply power to
service areas, whose political-administrative status and consequent load condition have changed.
Ekiti State, Nigeria, was selected and its 33 kV network configuration was modeled as a 64-node
network, which was used in computing and analyzing network performance-response to 3 respective
stages of power supply and load condition,at normal mode. The 64-nodemodel was carried out by
using a proposed heuristic 2.5-5 km-radius load concentration method. The network evaluationwas
carried out by conducting power flow analysis using direct matrix method. An analysis of the results
showed thatextension of 33 kV trunk lines to cover a whole State, while feeding them from the
exterior, is technically inadequate by voltage quality requirement even at given low load condition of
13.6 MVA of the service area. Four (4) Local Government Areas are critically affected. It was
concluded that at the given load condition, this problem would be solved by installing additional
132kV/33kV injection substations in the critical areas. In addition, this measure will improve
network efficiency by 33% with respect to the initial supply condition.
