  • Abstract:

In this study, Modified collagen fibre (MCF) obtained from cow hide, goat and chicken skin
were prepared using leather processing methods. The MCF was characterized by Fourier
Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the functional groups of the adsorbent were
identified. The effects of variable parameters such as; pH, temperature, contact time and initial
metal concentration on adsorption of Cu2+ ion from synthetic aqueous solution by Modified
Collagen Fibre (MCF) were investigated. From the results obtained, MCF from goat skin show
the highest capacity for Cu2+ removal within the pH range of 2 – 5. It was revealed that
Maximum adsorption capacity 93.57 % was reached at pH 3 for Cu2+ ion at 298 K using 100
mg/L as the initial concentration of Cu2+ solution. Decrease in the adsorption of Cu2+ ion was
noticed as the temperature increases. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic data for the entire process
were well fitted by the Freundlich model (R2~ 0.999) and pseudo-second order rate equation
respectively. The thermodynamic parameters calculated showed positive ΔG0 and negative ΔH0
indicating non-spontaneous and exothermic reaction for the adsorption process.
