  • Abstract:

Creative industries have contributed significantly to the social and economic development
of developing countries across the world. This research is hinged on the need to develop a model
underpin sustainable management of the ecotourism industry in Old Oyo National Park and its environs
utilizing the creative industries that abound in the local communities bordering the park. A multistage
sampling technique was used for this study in which the communities were purposively selected while
snow ball sampling technique was used in the second stage in selecting the respondents. A total of
eighty two (82) structured questionnaire was designed and administered to residents involved in the
creative industry within the selected five communities. Data collected were subjected to both descriptive
and multiple regression analysis. Perception of the respondents on the impacts of tourists’ visit to
their communities were rated on 5 point likert scale and the grand mean response was estimated to
arrive at the overall perception of the sampled respondents. Results revealed that respondents in the
age group of 41-50 recorded the highest percentage (44.44%, 41.66% and 35.00%) in sculpture, calabash
carving and cloth weaving respectively. The model statistically fit the prediction of income with R2=
0.55, F (4, 77) =22.583, P < 0.01. The age of the respondents was found to be statistically significant to the
prediction of income by the fitted model at p<0.05. Identified arts and craft existing in the adjoining
communities has boosted tourist visitation to the park and its environment. Sustainable development of
these creative industries around the park will go a long way in improving the socio-economic well-being
of the rural populace.
