  • Abstract:

Several researches have been carried out on protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers
in market transactions and examining the role of Consumer Protection Council in protecting
consumers. The findings of these works have not been encouraging in the case of Nigerian consumers.
This study assessed the extent consumers understand their rights while procuring drugs, examined
the extent consumers check the content of drug labels and evaluated the extent pharmaceutical and
patent medicine stores in Akure Metropolis, comply with consumers’ rights under the Federal
Competition and Consumer Protection (FCCP) Act and National Agency for Food, Drugs and
Administration Control (NAFDAC) Act. Data were collected from 104 drug purchasers using structured
questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistic (frequency, percentages, pie and bar charts).
Research instrument was validated through content validity by experts in the field of Marketing and
Law. Pilot test was also carried out. Reliability was tested with Cronbach Alpha. The study revealed
that, drug consumers in Akure Metropolis moderately understand their rights relating to purchase of
drugs, the consumers highly examine drug labels before purchase, they patronize pharmaceutical
stores more than patent medicine stores and the pharmaceutical stores comply more with NAFDAC
Act (FCCP is a new Act) in terms of purchase and return of drugs or money. The study recommends
that the FCCP Commission (FCCPC) and NAFDAC be more diligent in harmonizing and monitoring
the activities of patent medical stores in particular, and the pharmaceutical industry in general, to ensure
they abide by the content of FCCP and NAFDAC Acts.
