  • Abstract:

Body creams are almost an everyday cosmetic being used by virtually everyone, It contains some amount of heavy metals, which may useful in small quantity while others may pose health concern. This is because some of the body creams are usually moisturizing having the effect to stay within the skin to serve its purpose and thus hold the possibility to pass some of its content onto the human skin. This study evaluated the level of heavy metals in selected body creams (non-toning, moisturizing) in Akure City, Nigeria. It was undertaken to make a comparative metal composition in body creams with information reported in different literature. Samples were anlysed for heavy metals using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) after acid digestion. Metals analyzed in the samples include Cr which range from below detection limit to 0.27mk/kg, Cd with mean range 0.0010 mg/kg to 0.0570mg/kg, Co also from below detection limit to 0.30 mg/kg, while Mn shows a mean range of 0.0667mg/kg to 0.29mg/kg, Zn with 0.1267 to 1.07mg/kg, Ni with 1.82 to 6.72mg/kg, Pb with 0.9667mg/kg to 1.4167mg/kg, and Cu range from below detection limit to 0.0861mg/kg and the concentration was subjected to calculations to obtain the estimated daily intake and health risk index. The concentration of Pb in sample MC9 shows the highest mean concentration of 1.4167 mg/kg. All metals were detected while Co in MC1, Cu in MC5 and Cr in MC9 were not detected, the mean concentration was related to works done in the literature.
