  • Abstract:

The feasibility of preparing novel adsorbent a novel adsorbent was investigated by modifying the kola nut pod (Kp) with citric acid and nitric acid respectively. The prepared adsorbents were characterized using Fourier Transformed Infra-Red, Scan Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrophotometer techniques. The physicochemical properties of these adsorbents such as moisture, ash, lignin, cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose and extractives were evaluated. The results were compared with the expensive commercial activated carbon (CAC) parameters. A close agreement in moisture content, ash content and porosity of citric acid modified kola nut pod (CMP) and nitric acid modified kola nut pod (NMP) shows its feasibility as good and effective adsorbents. In conclusion, the present work reveals that acid modified CMP is a good and better alternative low cost adsorbent which can be used in lieu of expensive and non-degradable commercial activated carbon (CAC) for adsorption process.
