  • Abstract:

Several factors are responsible for the adoption of environmental waste management practice (EWMP) on construction sites. The adoption of EWMPs is crucial because of their influence on certain benefits on construction sites. This study was therefore conducted to determine the factors that are germane for their implementation and the benefits derived by the organizations where they are utilized. The objectives of the study are to evaluate important factors that influence decisions on EWMPs’ usage and to examine the benefits of EWMPs on construction sites. The population of the study was construction professionals on sites in Lagos State, Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used to select 63 companies out of the 126 construction companies in categories C, D and E of firms registered with Lagos State Public Procurement Agency. The findings of the study reveal that the highest ranked factor out of the 27 factors considered important for the usage of EWMPs is clear company’s policy while the least important factor is cost savings to reduce waste. Also, the effect of EWMPs is topmost in compliance with law. The study concludes that although there are many important factors for the choice of EWMPs on construction projects, the most important is clear company’s policy. It implies that companies with good policies will most likely implement EWMPs. The study recommends that company’s policies on EWMPs must be clear and well communicated. This can be done by including policies as accompany document with the programme of work and display on all sites.
