  • Abstract:

The importance of having sense of community as a necessary ingredient for existing and future communities in developed and developing countries cannot be gainsaid. Sense of community is vital to ensure that communities thrive and are resilient in the face of challenges. Sense of community is an underreported aspect of housing especially in developing countries like Nigeria. This study examines the dimensions of sense of community in selected public housing estates in Akure, Nigeria. It tests how a sense of community model previously developed suits the study areas. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the research. Mean Scoring and Factor Analysis were used to analyze the data for the study. Findings showed that the sense of community in the study area was high in the three housing estates individually and jointly. The study revealed three dimensions of sense of community in the study area namely: state of belonging and influence, shared bond and sense of care. The first dimension was loaded on fifteen variables, the second was loaded on six variables and the third was loaded on two variables. The paper concludes by providing implications, considering the importance of improving the sense of community in the study area.
