  • Abstract:

The public policy of increasing protein consumption using affordable sources has led to the campaign for incorporating soybean into the traditional food system of the rural dwellers in Nigeria. The campaign is expected to lead to increased soybean and hence protein consumption nationally. This study examines the consumption of soybean and FYI melon in 210 rural households selected through multi-stage sampling technique. Descriptive and inferential statistics and regression model were used to analyze the data gathered. The mean household size was .5, average age and income were 37 years and N145, 280 00 respectively. Soyflour and melon consumption per copra per year were about 4.0kg and 12. 3kg. Annual expenditure per household was N58.7.25 and N3,812.40 for soyflour and melon. No significant relationship exists between respondents' income and amount of soyflour consumed but there was for melon (P less than 0.05). Education of respondents and melon expenditure influenced quantity of soyflour consumed while age of person taking major food preparation decisions, household size, soyflour expenditure and income influenced melon consumption. The study concluded that there has been a low response to the campaign to step-up soybean consumption. More awareness of its nutrient compositions and development of locally manufactured mechanical devices that ease processing drudgery, would encourage soybean consumption
