  • Abstract:

Access to improved water has been considered as the most important precondition for sustaining human life, for maintaining ecosystems and for achieving sustainable development.  This paper examines some factors that impact on access to improved source of domestic water supply among households in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria.  Such analysis is critical to any decision on water system expansion and improvement in this rapidly urbanizing city.  Empirical estimates show that access to improved sources of domestic water supply is largely influenced by the main source of domestic water.  Other determinants of access to improved water include: distance from improved water source to house, average time spent fetching from the main source, average number of trips per person per day to main source, adequacy of supply from main source and quantity of water used per person per day. Some policy implications of the findings are discussed.
