  • Abstract:

There is growing concern for functional, effective and result oriented extension delivery services in order to meet the agricultural extension needs of the world farmers. This study is therefore designed to examine the perceived differences in benefits derived and attitude of farmers towards the public and private extension services in Southwestern Nigeria. Multi-stage random sampling technique was used to select thirty (30) respondents from each of the three selected organizations in the three purposively selected states in the study area. In all; two hundred and seventy (270) respondents were finally selected but two hundred and sixty four interview schedules were returned. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data collected. Descriptive tools used include frequency counts and percentages, while Kruskal Wallis one-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized to establish differences in the beneficiaries’ attitudes towards the organizations and benefits derived from the two types of the extension organizations involved in the study. Results revealed that degree of beneficiaries’ participation in all the private extension’s programmes was higher than in the public extension. Kruskal Wallis one way analysis of variance revealed significant difference(12.074,Assyp.Sig2.002) between the benefits derived by beneficiaries in the public and private extension organizations but attitude of beneficiaries towards the extension programmes of public and private organizations was however not significantly different (0.709,Assyp;Ssig20.702). Rural development agencies and extension policy makers are therefore recommended to intensify efforts in making more use of private extension organizations’ agents with wide experience in field work and adequate number of manpower to execute development programmes in the rural areas .Also, Public-Private partnership is recommended in the execution of the extension and development programmes .
