  • Abstract:

Variations and fluctuations in engineering projects still remains one of the challenges facing the construction industry in developing countries. There have been many cases of cost overruns as compared to projects that are completed within budget. This study sought to examine the subject matter of variation and fluctuations as they relate to road construction project, assess their effect on projects and make appropriate recommendations. The study is based on data collected from three completed projects in Ondo and Osun States. The results revealed that variations and fluctuations led to cost overruns in all the projects considered in the study. There are more cases of variations than fluctuations. The study recommends that adequate pre-contract planning and design briefs guided by proper feasibility and viability studies should be done before commencing any project. This will result in significant decrease in the occurrence of cost overturns and improve cost performance of projects
