  • Abstract:

An experimental apparatus that consists of a radial cam with an in-line knife-edge follower was developed for the study of the kinematics of valve-operating cam-follower mechanisms and the phenomenon of ignition in an internal combustion engine. The model incorporates a timer circuit, manual and automatic switches, and a micro switch circuit. It gives adequate room for data collection during experimentation. Experimentation with the apparatus produced results that are in very good agreement with analytical computations. It is also very stable and easy to use. In addition, the apparatus improved the student’s learning apart from considerable cost reduction when compared to imported ones. This kind of experimental apparatus will be very useful in tertiary institutions in sub-Sahara Africa, where it has become very difficult to secure enough funds for the purpose of setting up standard laboratories for effective training of students of engineering and technology.
