  • Abstract:

Owing to low academic productivity in Nigerian public Universities resulting from
irregular power supply, this study looked into the obtainable profile of a monocrystalline type of
solar panel with the aim of evaluating its applicability as an alternative source of energy for a typical
laptop computer common in Nigerian universities, using the Federal University of Technology as a
case study. The methods used in carrying out this study includes: obtaining empirical measurement
and conversion for the solar illumination and radiation in the premises of the Federal University of
Technology, Akure; and modeling of a Photovoltaic (PV) module using Matlab SIMULINK. Using the
obtained solar radiation data, sun simulation was carried out on the modeled module, and a profile
for number of panels required for work period of the day was obtained. The result shows that for a
work period of 9:00am to 4:00pm, (2 x 1m2) panels will be required, which has characteristic knee
voltage and power of 15V and 60W respectively.
