The average vertical structure of the refractive index for the models of the Linear
and exponential atmosphere were quantitatively studied and the appropriate relations were derived
for Lagos, a coastal area of Nigeria. The data used for the study were collected by radiosonde and
obtained from Meteorological station in Lagos, Nigeria. For the linear atmosphere, average structure
of the refractive index with height is defined using refractive index gradient and the effective
earth’s radius factor while for the exponential atmosphere, the average profile of the refractive
index with height was determined by average surface refractivity and the height coefficient, b,
using the exponential relation given by N(h)=Neexp(-bh). The average surface refractivity Ns and
the height coefficient b were derived as 386.4 N-units and 0.168 km-1 respectively. Hence, the ITUR
average values for Ns and b are not appropriate for this coastal area of Nigeria.
