  • Abstract:

This work is focused on studying comparatively the properties of Kapok (Ceiba
pentandra) and Kurya (Bombax costatum) fibres. The samples of the two fibres were collected from
different sources and tests were carried out using the same condition of tests for the two samples.
The mean fibre length, mean fibre fineness, mean moisture content and regain, density, specific
volume and weight of the trash content of kapok fibres were obtained to be 2.00cm, 5.19μg/inch,
2.27% and 2.33%, 0.0940g/cm3, 10.638cm3/g and 0.230g respectively while those of kurya fibres
were obtained to be 2.88cm, 3.28μg/inch, 8.41% and 9.18%, 0.3975g/cm3, 2.516cm3/g and 0.097g
respectively. The results obtained from all the properties tested shows that kurya fibre is better for
use in areas where increased length, fineness, moisture content and regain, density and specific
volume and lower trash content is of paramount importance compared to kapok fibre.
