- Abstract:
A quick stop device, for a lathe machine, was developed for research and teaching
purposes. The device works using the principle of shearing a notched pin to energize and implement
the stoppage of machine tool. The developed device works similarly to other QSD by disengaging
the cutting tool during the cutting process at any predetermined time by the operator so as to obtain
a chip sample while still attached to the workpiece. The device was designed to work using both
mechanical and electromagnetic mechanisms by compressing a plunger via a compression spring
which when released produces a force that hits the base of the tool holder or based block and
instantaneously knocks off the cutting tool, thereby stopping the cutting process. Compared with
conventional QSD, it is safer, simpler in design and construction as well as being easier to operate
with minimal component weight.
