  • Abstract:

Epoxidation of Jatropha curcas (JCO) and Thevetia peruviana oil (TPO) was carried
out with peroxyacetic acid generated in situ from aqueous H2O2 (30 %) as oxygen donor and glacial
acetic acid (GAA) as oxygen carrier at 50oC in the presence of conc. H2SO4 as catalyst. The
kinetics study was done using iodine conversion kinetic and relative conversion to oxirane kinetic
model. JCO and TPO contained 78.11% and 73.22% unsaturation respectively from palmitoleic,
oleic, linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic and erucic acid. These unsaturated fatty acids in JCO and
TPO were converted to oxirane by epoxidation with iodine conversion 84.12% and 80.68%
respectively. The relative conversion of JCO and TPO to oxirane was 74.38% and 70.20%
respectively. The rate constant of the chemical modification of JCO and TPO was found to be
0.3168 Lmolh-1 and 0.2785 Lmolh-1 respectively in iodine conversion kinetic model, 0.2000 Lmolh-
1 and 0.1650 Lmolh-1 respectively in relative conversion to oxirane kinetic model. It was observed
that iodine conversion model gave a better oxirane yield and rate of conversion of unsaturated fatty
acid in the oil to oxirane. The conversion of JCO and TPO to epoxides was confirmed by FT-IR and
GC method of chemical analyses.
