  • Abstract:

This research work evaluates the suitability of charcoal filter in purifying raw
water. Samples for unfiltered raw water were collected from Awere River within Ede town. The
arrangement of the filter consists of 3 mm thickness of cotton wool placed at the bottom of the
bucket, followed by 5 mm thickness of activated carbon. Flow rate test was conducted on the filtered
water, and physical, chemical and bacteriological analyses were also conducted on filtered and
unfiltered water. The charcoal filter has 93.9% efficiency in removing bacterial coliform present
in the water. Conclusively, filter arrangement of activated carbon and cotton wool has higher
efficiency in the removal of pathogenic impurities and harmful contaminants, thereby improving
the taste and odour of the treated water.
