Phytochemical screening of extract of leaves, inflorescence and whole Spillanthes acmella
plant was conducted using three different solvents. The result showed that aqueous extract of
whole plant and inflorescence showed positive test for reducing sugar, anthraquinone,
flavanoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and glycosides. Saponins were present in all the
extracts of whole plant, leaves and inflorescence. Cardiac glycosides were present in
chloroform extract, petroleum ether extract of inflorescence. Evaluations of antimicrobial
activities of the extracts were carried out. The extracts demonstrated antimicrobial and
antifungal activity against the organism used.
