  • Abstract:

The kinetic of producing glycerol and fatty acid from thermal stripping of palm oil was studied at various temperature and time intervals ranging from [(90-200 o C) and (0-120 min)] respectively. The acid value of unstripped palm oil was 0.20 which served as a standard reference for the subsequent stripping. The acid increased with 0.07 unit from 0.20 to 0.27 at 90 o C, as the time increased above 30 min, the acid value increased with 0.06 unit which then became fairly constant. The oil produced more fatty acids at lower temperature less than 100 o C. The higher reactivity of the oil at the lower temperature could be adduced to its lower activation energy of 0.237 kJ. The reaction rate revealed that the reaction followed first order since it gave a linear graph whereas there was a scatter of the data points in the second order plot, indicating dependence of the observed first order kinetic reaction rate on the oil concentration.
